Five hints for passing the CAIA level 1
Posted by wenzi on 14 Oct 2006 at 10:05 pm | Tagged as: CAIA(t)
Well, I got my test results back for the C.A.I.A. level 1 exam. There is an article at Wikipedia for a little more background. Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst
I think the exam will be harder starting next September ( 2007 ), as they are removing the Investments part. But as for now, here are my impressions.
[1] Easy if you study enough
That is the whole point about this kind of test. It tests you on an understanding of concepts and applications, not minutiae. The questions on the test are not hard IF you understand what is going on with the concept. and by enough a mean a long enough time to get used to the concepts that you didn’t get on the job so that you can apply them. Actually, any test can be easy if you study enough.
[2] Work on the things you don’t know
If you , like me, are coming from a particular field, you will have to study some in the other areas. For me the derivatives parts were easy as well as the regulations.
The part that was not so easy was the fixed income and real estate. I never worked in either of those two area, so I was a little out of sorts.
[3] If you have a CFA, the test is easier FOR NOW
Note that the exam is changing for the Sep 2007 exam. Right now there is a lot of overlap between the CFA. The CAIA uses the CFA ethics book, so you already have that part and the Investment book is pretty standard for the CFA ( and MBA’s use it a lot also ). After Sep 2007 , only the ethics book will remain, with the rest becoming just alternative investments.
[4] Take a prep course
It will save you a bunch of time. If nothing else, it will help you organize the study materials. Schweser is finally coming out with a prep course , so I expect them to become the ‘big dog’ in the CAIA test prep area like they are for the CFA. If you have the time, EDHEC and INSEAD have three day programs. You will still have to study some after these intensive classes, so don’t think you can spend three days and then pass.
Prep packages
Schweser They have their first study guides just coming out now, but if they are as good as their CFA guides, it should be nice.
Uppermark Highly recommended. Great self study course.
KalmAI - Better to say nothing …
[5] Practice with your calculator
For me, I had practice test software that was the most help. The concepts were cool and I didn’t have a problem with them using the software, the test software did help me point out my weak spots in test taking. My main problem was making manual mistakes with my calculator. I sit in front of a computer all day with R and Gnumeric around for anytime I need to calculate anything. Doing things the old fashioned way took some time.

And yes, I passed.
hwat? they makes you use old tech stuff like calculators? dude, they should let us use laptops with c or fortran or something so we can write code to do all this calc stuff for us. calculators are bogus anyway man.
ethics ? yeah, like mba’s really use those books.
Hi,
I am in the preparation of CAIA Level I now. I registered the Exam quite later. on the 2nd last day. I have 7 weeks to go. Do you have some suggestion? They said 4 hours and with 0.5 hour break? Does this 0.5 hour accounted into those 4 hours? In CPA exam, the break is included in the total time schedule.
Jack
FRM
Hi Jack,
No, the exam is 4.5 hours in total. The half an hour break is not included in the four hours.
With 7 weeks to go, I think you can do it , and my advice is to get software testing program that matches the format of the exam. You won’t learn as much from software, but running the practice exams will show you where your weaknesses are so you can focus your study.

Anyone wants to sell their CAIA level 1 and 2 books, please let me know.
Thanks
I realize that you have to have one year experience plus bachelor degree to become member CAIA - but do u need this to take level 1? Am I eligible to take level 1 as a senior in college in september? I would be learning most of the curriculum for the first time.
It is my understanding that you can sit for the exams, but you cannot use the designation until you have one year experience and a bachelor’s degree.
My answer is yes, you can take Level I as a senior in college, but you should check with CAIA as their answer is definitive.
In your opinion, could a student w/limited finance background (history major) pass level 1 in september? I understand basic stat and econ; interning as a financial analyst this summer. Not sure if I should even attempt, would appreciate any advice/insight.
I would say IF you started NOW , you could pass. The CAIA changed for this fall so there is less on investments as you now are expected to know basic asset valuation and portfolio theory. The less familiar you are with the material, the more time you will need.
I would think you could do it, and you will have a better idea by looking at the study guides for fall 2007. However , the fall study guides are not up which sucks.
I learned a lot from studying, even if I just studied and did not take the exam, it would have been worth it. But having a test on the line that you paid for, does give you motivation to study.
thanks for the advice. they just put out the books for sept 2007 altho not study guide yet. I noticed that the questions are like 200 and only 4 hrs so thats about 50questions/hr.
so for math…are u doing hard calculations really quickly? regression analysis quickly?
are u doing simple calcualtions?
are u only asked to recognize formulas?
are u allowed to use scrap paper? or just the calculator..
thanks!
one more thing…
OCt 14 is the date u wrote this….was that the date u got ur scores? how many wks post exam was this.
I tried the Prep Package of KalmAI (Inst. Inv) and I have to agree on your statement (although it was for the second level): BETTER TO SAY NOTHING OR IN OTHER WORDS, AVOID IT.
I just passed CAIA level I this March, 2007 and I have the whole package of Schweser for sale. It includes
1. Study Notes – 2 books.
2. Flashcards.
3. Practice Exams.
4. Online exams – 3 (print outs).
Personally that was the only material I studied. I found the material was excellent and relevant to the exam questions. If anyone interested in buying, send me an email at

call me at 734-775-3308

I understand the program assumes you have an “elementary, undergraduate understanding finance.” Does anyone have tips (specific books, websites, trainings, etc.) for how I can achieve this?
Or do you think I can pick up the required finance background just from studying the suggested readings for TEST 1 (without worrying about the prereqs.)?

Does anybody have level I and/or level II prep materials that I might be able to purchase? I am looking to take the test March 08
Thanks,
Ryan
Hi,
I am interested to know more about the selfstudy package of Uppermark. Would you please make some comment on the similarity of the real CAIA exam and the practice exam qu of Uppermark? Because some ppl comment about scheweser exam questions too straightforward comparing with CAIA exam and there are too many calculation questions in practice questions which is not the case in real exam. What about Uppermark? Besides, do you know how to obtain some real past exam questions of CAIA? Thanks for your sharing!
Warm Regards,
Mike

I am a financial advisor, and I was thinking about taking the CAIA, so I can get into Investment Management at my firm. Will the CAIA suffice, if I have no background in finance/economics, or the like? Or would I be better off getting my CFA? Anyone’s advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you very much,
Adam
With a degree in International Relations and with two years experience as a financial advisor at a major wire house, will the CAIA allow me to move into AI? Or do you recommend getting an MBA? Does it open up doors abroad?
Thanks so much for your help,
Adam
Much like a few other people inquired, I wanted to know which examprep material to buy. Does anyone have any recommendations on whether Schweser, II, or UpperMark would be the best buy for the March Level 1 CAIA?? Any feedback would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks!

For Level 1, will a formula sheet be provided during the exam? I found it hard to memorise all the formula!
Thx
EC
Ec,
You have to memorize the formula sheet. It is not as hard as it seems. If you work a lot of the problems by hand, you will learn the formulas easily.

hey guys, just wanted to let you know i passed my CAIA Level 1 exam for sept 2008. i studied with uppermark study books (6/20 to 9/14), so for those of you who asked about how long it takes to study, you should set aside 3 months. if you study hard enough and read through all the study guide, you’ll pass.
Here are some tips on how to pass! def need to concentrate on the quant section, know all the definitions ie: private equity fee terms, mezz terms, know how to calc off balance sheet, know char of hedge funds, commodity index etc…
In case you are interested i m selling my uppermark package on ebay. i brought it for $599 but i listed starting $49.99 (just go through all my hightlighted areas. that’s where i concentrated and I passed)
